Frequently asked questions
What about boys? The syllabi are especially designed to keep boys occupied, interested and fit.
Where do I take my exams? Either at the school or at the headquarters of the Dance Societies (Battersea for RAD, and Old Street, London for ISTD)
What will it be like? Dancers can be examined in sets of up to four people. The teacher will make sure you have thought about everything before you go in to the exam studio to show your work. You will need to be well groomed and wearing the correct uniform. Most sections of the exam will be danced with the other candidates but certain items will be danced alone. CD's will be played for modern and tap exams but a pianist will play the ballet exam music. The examiner may make a new pattern of steps for you to demonstrate if this is part of the exam that you are taking and will make notes on your performance. Once you have finished you will curtsey or bow, say 'thank you' to the examiner and return to the dressing room. About four weeks later you will receive your
results.. your teacher will explain the marking system to you and you will be able to progress to the next dance level.
Student Senior School Diplomas RAD and ISTD exam results are UCAS recognised and higher levels gain valuable UCAS points to be counted towards a place at University or college.

Why do we take exams?
Exams help us to rise to a higher standard, to polish and tidy our work and to sharpen up our memory. They make sure that we have reached a point where we can demonstrate well the dancing pieces that we have learned. Also they prepare us for the ability we need when working at the next level. They help us raise our confidence without having to perform in front of a big audience.
What if I move abroad?
You will be able to find schools all over the world where you can continue your examinations just where you left them.
